Illustration project  - The Tragic Tale of Dermot and Grainne

Hello everybody! Here you will find things of interest for your illustrated books!

First of all: a quick summary of the story...

Dermot and Grainne….
Finn is old and lonely, his warriors want him to find a new wife.  A suitable match is found in Grainne, the daughter of the High King of Tara.

One of the Fianna, Dermot, is considered to be the most attractive man in Ireland, and Grainne had been in love with him long before her engagement to Finn.

At the feast to celebrate the engagement, Grainne puts a potion in the drinking horn that sends everybody into a deep sleep except Dermot and some of the other Fianna, including Oisin, Finn’s son.

Dermot does not want to betray his master but Grainne puts him under Geasa to run away with her.  His friends support him, saying that he has no choice.

Dermot and Grainne run away together but the next morning Finn wakes up to finds them gone.  He is furious and calls the Fianna to chase them.

Dermot begins to find Grainne very attractive, even though he will not be her lover out of loyalty to Finn, but she mocks him and seduces him and they become lovers.

They live a life on the run from Finn and the Fianna for a year, they are sometimes helped by Dermot’s friends in the Fianna. They have many adventures and stay in many different places that are now named after them.

Following the year on the run a truce is agreed - Finn gives up the chase and the couple settle down in Sligo, by Benbulben.  After another year living in peace, Grainne starts to miss her father and wants to have a feast for him and for Finn.  Dermot doesn’t agree but accepts.

Finn and the Fianna come for the feast which goes on for many days.  All seems well until one night Dermot awakes to the sound of horns and a hunt.  Grainne begs him not to go out but he does.  On the slopes of Benbulben he meets with Finn and the Fianna, who are out to hunt a famous boar.

Dermot finds the Boar alone, it is huge and terrifying and his spear bounced of it and he broke his sword on it as it charged him and gored him.  Me manages to kill the boar with the broken end of his sword but is mortally wounded in the process.

Finn and the Fianna find Dermot dying.  Dermot begs Finn to heal him but Finn is indecisive and lets Dermot die.
